When children return to school after the holidays and especially after the long summer holiday there is an increase in the number of children developing flare ups of their asthma. Every year in September more children are admitted into hospital due to asthma than any other month. One reason for this may be that children get out of the habit of taking regular preventative inhalers over the holidays and normal viruses trigger asthma symptoms.
If your child has asthma please encourage them to continue taking their asthma medicines as prescribed by your doctor throughout the holidays. This will help reduce the risk of common coughs and colds making your child’s asthma symptoms worse when they go back to school.
