Welcome to Year 3 and 4

 

Please read our termly newsletter below to find out what will be happening in Year 3 and 4 this term.

Summer Term 2

Week 5

In Science this week we continued our learning on rocks and carried out an investigation looking at which rocks were permeable and which were not. On Thursday, we had moving up day. We set ourselves goals for the year to come and did some work on our new topic for September. In maths, we looked at alien length problems and in English we worked on our spellings.

Week 4

This week was 'Be Healthy Week' and we have been very busy! We have taken part in many workshops including dance, rugby, gymnastics, hula-hooping and road safety. On Wednesday, we prepared 'fruity pizzas' to have in our indoor picnic in the hall. As if that wasn't enough, we also had our class assembly on Thursday morning. The theme was 'Channel 3/4' with the children performing programmes showcasing their learning. Some of the programmes were the Jolly Geography show with their fascinating volcano and earthquake facts and the Arty Art Show demonstrating how to create the perfect water colour picture. The children worked incredibly hard and with great enthusiasm on their performances.

Week 2

We have continued reading the Famous Five this week and have been looking at settings and adventures we could have in our own stories. In Science, we have been learning about rocks and fossils. We looked at the texture and appearance of the different rocks and carried out an investigation into which was the most hard-wearing. In computing, we have been working on our PowerPoint presentations and have all created a slide about ourselves complete with effects! The highlight of our week was our brass performance on Wednesday. We performed some of our work in front of parents and pupils and felt very proud of how far we have come this year.

Week 1

We started our new topic this week which is Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. On Monday we painted volcanoes and then splattered red, orange and yellow paint on it to make it look like exploding lava. In English, we have started to read The Famous Five. We have been learning about the types of characters in adventure stories. In Computing, we are learning how to create our own PowerPoint presentations and will be making some about our topic.

Summer Term 1

Week 6

In English this week, we have been writing biographies about people in our family after we interviewed them about their lives. We also wrote a poem called 'If I had Wings' and included figurative language. On Thursday, we were very proud to show our watercolours and photographs at the art exhibition. Our grown-ups were very impressed with all the hard work we had put into our art. On Friday, we had a visit from a photographer who was taking photographs of us doing different activities in school for our brand new website!

 

Week 5

In maths, we have been learning about analogue and digital time. We also timed our friends doing different tasks to see how long they would take. We learned a rhyme to help us know how many days were in each month. In science, we were learning about habitats. We know that under a stone is a micro-habitat and a mountain is a macro-habitat. We have continued to practice our spellings for the spelling bee for which we will be holding our school final next week. Finally, we started our wonderful watercolours this week and will be showing them at our art exhibition next week. 

 

Week 4

This week we have been on a walk to the park to photograph trees. We will be using these photographs to help us draw our own trees. Whilst at the park, we also collected natural materials for our sculptures inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy. In maths, we have carried on our work with fractions and some of us were learning about decimals too. In science, we looked at our plants from our investigations and looked at how water is transported in stems by putting celery in coloured water. In English, we have been learning about figurative language such as personification and metaphors.

 

Week 3

In maths this week, we have been learning to find fractions of amounts using bar modelling and number lines. In our topic work, we have been taking photographs of each other in traditional and candid styles. We had a lot of fun on the playground trying to capture interesting shots. In English, we looked at a famous poem called Daffodils by William Wordsworth. We looked for examples of similes, descriptive words and hyperboles. In science, we watched an episode of 'The Magic Schoolbus' which taught us about what's inside a flower. We also looked at how our seeds were growing from our investigation.

 

Week 2

This week in English we have been writing rap style poems based on the poem ‘Gran, can you rap?’ by Jack Ousby. In science, we set up investigations to discover how plants grow. Over the next few weeks, we will see how well they are growing in different conditions. In our topic work, we were learning about famous sculptors such as Richard Deacon in preparation for making sculptures in future weeks. We were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Crompton today, but we're looking forward to meeting her baby soon!

 

Week 1

This week we have started our new topic ‘Take a picture’. We began by creating our own photo booth in the classroom and used props and costumes to create interesting poses. We then took photographs of each other. In Science, we began to learn about plants. We watched a cool cartoon that taught us about how plants make food in their leaves. We also found out how water is transported from the roots up the stem. In English, we wrote kennings about our favourite animals.

 

Week 6

This week it has been 'Faith Week' in school and we have been learning all about Judaism.  On Monday we had a very interesting trip to a Synagogue in Bradford and learn a lot of information about the Jewish religion.  We have enjoyed learning about the Jewish festivals and also discussing the similarities and differences of the Jewish faith to other religions.  This week we have also been busy planning and practising our topic celebration for our parents.  We have loved learning about the Romans and Vikings this term and there was so much that we wanted to share with you.  Thank you to everyone who came to our topic celebration and letting us share our learning with you.  Our week ended with our Easter service at St John's church and lots of fun Easter activities.  Enjoy your Easter break!

 

Week 5

In English this week we have enjoyed continuing our story Saving the Unicorn's Horn and we are excited to see how it ends.  In Maths we have been working with fractions and we are making such good progress with this.  On Wednesday some of our class went to Leeds West Academy to perform in a Wake Up Shake Up competition and they performed very well.  We enjoyed decorating buns and biscuits on Thursday for our Comic Relief Bun Sale and thank you to all those people that came to buy our buns and biscuits.  On Friday we enjoyed raising money by dressing up for Comic Relief and there was some very funny outfits! Congratulations to Jessica, Bareerah and Olivia for winning the jokathon in our class with some very funny jokes. 

 

Week 4

We had a good start to our week with a trip to Farsley Library.  During our session we had a chat about books and the rules of the library and then we did some group work.  We worked in groups to find out about the Vikings and presented our findings to the rest of the class using pictures, facts and some of us even made some Lego models to show what we had found out.  At the end of the session we all got to chose a book to bring back to school.  On Friday we had a fantastic Science Day.  We did lots of exciting investigations to develop our scientific knowledge.  Our favourite activity was going in the inflatable dome in the hall where we found out about stars and the solar system.

 

Week 3

We have really enjoyed our new learning in Maths this week with fractions.  We have all become more confident with working with fractions and we have a better understanding of how to find fractions of amounts and numbers.  This half term in our PHSE lessons we have been thinking about similarities and differences.  This week we thought about how we are all similar and different and even compared ourselves to a girl who lives in a small village in Africa.  In topic this week we have been finding out about what an Anglo Saxon village would look like and what it would be like to live in an Anglo Saxon village.  In our sketch books we drew plans of an Anglo Saxon village and then worked together as a class to create one.  Here is the Anglo Saxon village we created.....

Week 2

On Tuesday we had a fantastic day at Royal Armouries.  In the morning we had time to explore the museum and then did a Saxons story workshop in the afternoon.  Back at school on Wednesday we produced some work about the trip for our Topic books.  In English we have been focusing on improving and extending sentences.  We have worked hard to produce sentences which include fronted adverbials, adjectives and adverbs.  In Maths this week we have been applying our addition and subtraction knowledge to help us to solve problems.  We have been using the column addition and column subtraction methods to show our working out.  We have continued to find out about Anglo Saxons during our topic sessions and we are really enjoying this topic.  On Thursday we did PE up at Farfield and loved taking part in our new activities.

Spring Term 2

Week 1

Hope you've all had a lovely week off.  We have had a good start to our half term this week.  In Maths we have been developing our understanding of place value and we have also been looking at Roman numbers.  In English we are very excited to start our new story in 'The Scar Gatherers' series and we wonder where Joe will travel to next!  In Science we have continued with our magnet topic and have been exploring magnetic and non magnetic materials.  We all did very well with our Anglo Saxon and Viking home learning projects and enjoyed sharing our home learning about warriors with the rest of the class.

 

 

Week 6

We had a fantastic start to the week this week with our Orienteering activity at Otley Chevin.  We had an amazing time and got very muddy!  The Year 13 students from Priesthorpe taught us how to follow the map and helped us to complete the course.  In Maths this week we have been learning to tell the time.  We have been practising telling the time using anologue and digital clocks.  We have also been solving time problems using what we have learnt.  In our Brass lessons this week we have been practising the Old McDonald and Mr Cool songs.  During our English and Topic sessions we have been writing non chronological reports about the Romans.

Week 5

This week we have been very busy filming all our footage for our film for the Golden Owls award.  We have been writing the scripts and acting out all the different scenes.  We have loved making our film and are very pleased with it.  We are excited to show it to all of our parents next week during Open Session on Thursday.  During our English lessons we have been continuing reading our Roman story and doing different activities about the book.  In Maths we have been doing multiplication and division assessments to show how much we have learnt and to identify our next steps in our learning.

 

Week 4

This week in English we have continued with our Roman book called The Leopard in the Golden Cage.  We are loving this book and all the adventures Joe and Lucy are having.  In Maths we have continued with our multiplication and division work.  We have been practising using the methods that we learnt last week to help us to solve multiplication and division problems and puzzles.  We have also continued to learn our times tables as we are trying to become fluent with the times tables that we know.  This week in topic we have been learning about the Roman army and why they were so successful in their invasion of England.  We have also been finding out about Hadrian's Wall including why and how it was built.

 

Week 3

This week we have continued with our Roman topic.  We found out about the Celts and how and why the Romans wanted to invade and settle in Britain.  We also found out about the Roman Empire and shaded maps of Europe to show how big the Roman Empire actually was.  In Maths we have been working on multiplying and dividing numbers.  We have been solving multiplication calculations by grouping, using arrays and using formal written methods.  We have also been working very hard to practise and learn our times tables.  This week we also started our new topic in Science on forces.  We have been learning about what forces are and how they affect us in our everyday lives.

 

Week 2

We had a fantastic start to the week this week with our Roman archeological dig.  We were archeologisits for the day and had to find out about what it was like in Roman times using the artefacts that we found in our dig.  In Maths we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 using our place value knowledge.  Also in Maths we have been practising to count in steps of 25, 100 and 50 and spotting the patterns in these sequences.  In PE this week we didn't go to Fairfield due to the weather but instead but has a very competitive game of Benchball in the hall!

Spring Term 1

Week 1

Welcome back and we hope that you've all had an enjoyable Christmas holidays.  In Year 3/4 we have had a lovely first week back.  We have really enjoyed sharing our holiday learning logs with each other and loved hearing what each other had been up to.  We have also thought about and made up our own New Year's Resolutions.  On Thursday we had a very exciting afternoon when we watched the Cinderella pantomime.  We have been using Talk 4 Writing to help us to learn the story of Cinderella with actions.  In Maths we have been looking at numbers up to and beyond 1000.  We have been playing games with these numbers to help us develop an understanding of the place value of these numbers.

 

Week 7

We have had a very fun and exciting last week of term.  On Tuesday afternoon we went to West Leeds Activity Centre.  We had an amazing time on the Go-Karts and the inflatables and we all loved trying new and exciting activities.  On Thursday evening we really enjoyed performing our Brass instruments in church.  We have been practising very hard in our Brass lessons with Mr Roberts and hope you enjoyed our 'Jingle Bell' performance.  Our week ended with our party day on Friday and we even had a very special visitor that came to bring us some presents!  Hope you all have a lovely Christmas break and a very Happy New Year!

 

Week 6

We have had a lovely time this week watching everyone's Nativity Performances.  On Monday we went to watch Nursery and Reception's performance and on Tuesday we even went to Springbank to watch their Year 3 and 4 perform.  We thought all the performances we watched were amazing!  In Brass this week we have been busy practising for our performance in church next week.  We will be performing 'Jingle Bells' and are very excited for you to hear it!

 

Week 5

We have had a busy week this week and it has been the start of the festive season in Year 3 and 4.  At the beginning of the week we started to make our Christmas crafts for the Christmas Fair on Friday.  We have been finger painting penguins and robins on gift tags so look out for them at the fair!  On Tuesday we went to Priesthorpe High School to practise with the Year 7's and also some children from Springbank and Southroyd for our Christmas performance.  Our performance to parents was on Thursday evening and we all sang our hearts out and had an amazing time! Our week ended with a very Christmassy Friday where we all decorated the Christmas tree in the hall and sang Christmas songs and carols.  We also had a very fun and busy Christmas Fair on Friday and thank you everyone who came and supported us. 

Week 4

In Maths this week we have continued with our multiplication and division work.  We have used repeated addition and arrays to solve multiplication problems and also started to use column multiplication to help us to solve multiplication calculations.  We have also been using Numicon rods to help us to solve and understand division calculations.  In English we have continued to read the BFG by Roald Dahl.  We wrote about our own personal dreams for the future and also created our own exciting adventurous dreams.  During our Science lessons this week we have been investigating materials that are conductors and insulators of electricity.  We have enjoyed our Pilates session this week where we practised poses using an Olympic theme.   

 

Week 3

This week we have continued with our Roald Dahl topic.  We have continued to read The BFG and we have been thinking about all the different characters in the story.  In Maths we have been multiplying numbers.  We have used repeated addition and arrays to help us to multiply numbers.  We have also been practising our times tables.  In Science we did an investigation to find out which circuits work and which ones didn't.  We had to use our scientific knowledge to make predictions.  In PE this week we didn't go to Farfield due to the weather but we did Pilates instead.  We are really enjoying practising our jungle sequence and we have getting a lot better with the different pilates poses and transitions.  We had a fun day on Friday for Children in Need and we hope you all enjoyed the buns and biscuits we made!

 

Week 2

This week we had a lovely start to the week with our 'Roald Dahl Day'.  The Year 3 children from Farsley Fairfield came to join us and we took part in lots of different Roald Dahl activities.  In English we have started reading The BFG.  We have been looking at all the amazing language Roald Dahl uses and we have also been using this to help us to describe The BFG.  In Maths we have been continuing to play games to practise our place value understanding.  We really enjoyed our Science this week where we started to learn about electricity.  We used the equipment to make a light bulb light up in a circuit.

Autumn Term 2

Week 1

We have had a lovely first week back and it has been 'Black History Week' in school.  In Year 3 and 4 we have been learning about Barack Obama.  At the beginning of the week we thought about all the things that we would like to find out about Barack Obama.  Then we planned and wrote our own biographies to explain about Barack Obama's life.  In Maths this week we have been looking at place value.  We have played lots of games to help us develop our understanding about the place value of 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers.  In PE this week we have all enjoyed starting our new activities at Farsley Fairfield.  

 

Week 7

In Topic this week we have loved learning all about Westroyd in the past.  We have looked at pictures of our school from the past and enjoyed asking Mrs Roper questions about what it was like at Westroyd when she was a little girl.  We have also learnt about what schools and lessons were like in Victorian times and discussed the similarities and differences of Victorian schools to our school now. On Thursday we enjoyed sharing our learning with our adults and thank you everyone for coming!  On Friday we enjoyed our dance sessions with Flex Dance and loved watching everyone else's performances at the end of the day.  Enjoy your half term holidays!

 

Week 6

In English this week we have continued with out poetry work.  We have been making lists of rhyming words and we even made up our own silly rhyming verses.  In Maths we have continued to practise subtracting numbers.  This week we have started to learn our Christmas songs for our Christmas performance at Priesthorpe and we are loving the songs!  On Thursday we enjoyed watching Year 2 perform the The Enormous Turnip in church during our Harvest festival.  We also enjoyed singing the songs for all the visitors.  At the end of the week we had a very wet Wellie Walk!  But the rain didn't stop us and we had lots of fun.

 

Week 5

This week we have continued with our topic about the body.  We learnt about teeth and made our own teeth models using marshmallows.  In English we have been reading poems about the body and we even had a go at writing our own alliteration poems.  In Maths we have been learning different way to subtract numbers.  We have used number lines and partitioning to help us.  This week we have also been very busy learning our Harvest festival songs ready for church next week.

 

 

Week 4

We had fun this week during our topic lessons where we were finding out about our skeleton.  We had to construct our own skeletons and we labelled and learnt about some of the bones in the body.  In English we have been using our story plans to write our own Lego Movie stories.  When we had finished our stories we enjoyed reading them to our friends.  In Maths we have continued to learn different ways to add numbers and we have been practising numbers bonds with Mrs Winkley.  In phonics and spelling we have been looking at all the different ways to spell 'igh' and looking at words with prefixes.  Also this week we have started to organise and create a more cosy and exciting reading area in our classroom.

Week 3

This week we have enjoyed continuing our Lego Movie topic in English. We designed and made our own Lego inventions!  We have also used story boards to help us to start planning our own Lego Movie story.   In topic this week we have learnt about how food travels through our bodies and have labelled the digestive system.  We also made a very large example of a digestive system for our Learning Journey board.  In Maths we have been learning different ways to add numbers.  We have been counting on and partitioning numbers to help us find totals.  We also been using the new addition strategies to help us solve problems and puzzles.

Week 2

This week we have had a very fun and sporty week!  On Wednesday we went to John Charles to try lots of different Para Olympic activities and we loved the wheel chair tennis and the sitting down volleyball.  Also this week we have started our PE afternoons at Farsley Fairfield.  We loved meeting all the new children and teachers and also enjoyed taking part in the activities in the sunshine!  In Maths this week we have been ordering numbers and rounding 2 digit and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10.  We have continued with our Lego Movie work in English and have been describing and comparing different settings using powerful adjectives and similes.  In Topic we have been looking at how to eat a balanced and healthy diet and trying to sort food into different food groups.  We have also been discussing and finding out why each food group is so important to our body.

Autumn Term 1

Week 1

Welcome back! We have had a lovely first week back in our new class.  We have had a busy week getting to know each other and setting up new class rules and routines.  We have also started an exciting topic in English about Lego Movie and we have been designing and describing our own Lego characters.  In Maths we have been reading, writing and ordering 3 digit and 4 digit numbers.  We have also been learning the value of each of the digits in these numbers using our place value knowledge.  On Wednesday we had our first brass lesson, which was so much fun!  We started to read some music and practised how to blow into our brass instruments using balloons!  We have also chosen all of our activities for PE at Fairfield and are excited to start our PE lessons next week.  We are also looking forward to the Para Olympic event next Wednesday at John Charles.
