Any opportunity to hang out together!
I could have posted a whole reel of gorgeous photographs of our Y6 children spending time and supporting their Y1 buddies this week. On Friday they shared stories together, had a giggle and left with big hugs all round! I go back time after time, to what the Ofsted inspector said. "The children at this school are delightful!"
As the children know, I do like a cup of tea, especially if it is made by our governor, Adi Jones! Mr Popple needs lessons from Adi, as he is not right good at making the perfect brew yet, even after two years of working alongside me! Anyway, at the end of the week, on a Friday, I invite children to join me for a brew, a natter, a game of Uno and inevitably, the biscuit tin is opened! Over all my years of teaching, the old favourites are still the most popular! Custard Creams, Rich tea, Malted Milk and Bourbons! I don’t try to introduce any new styles any more, just the classics. However, my arm was twisted this week, by a Y4 pupil who told me about Digestive Pink Biscuits. If you have not seen them, they are a fundraiser for Pinktober, the breast cancer awareness charity. Initial disappointment by the fact they were much smaller than a usual digestive, was overcome by how tasty they were. Raspberry and cream flavour! I would recommend it!
In other news, our new school council has been elected by the children, made up of two representatives from each class Y1 to Y6. As the council, we then asked individuals to put themselves forward for different roles. I can say that following some exciting manifestos and secretive voting, we have a new chair, Phillipa in Y5, supported by Lucas as the vice chair. Willow is our marketing manager, and I am sure to be well-organised by Emilia in Y6, who is the secretary!
We have had sporting success, too, this week! Handball being the sport. In the summer I was lucky enough to meet the Hamburg Handball team, who were training in the same venue as me. Mighty tall individuals, and what a fabulous game to play and watch! As always, our Y4 and Y6 teams went out, believing they could win and they did! Our sporting success in any sport, continues to highlight our excellent PE teaching. The children are taught such transferable skills in our lessons, it does not matter what the game is, we can always be successful!
Y6 had a really informative visit by a member of our local Sikh community last week. The children were full of questions, building on the knowledge they already had about Sikhism, learnt in their RE lessons. It is important that our children learn about different cultures and beliefs to ensure we prepare them to make positive contributions in society and promote community cohesion.
Finally, we welcomed another two children to the Westroyd family this week. Both have settled in easily. As I walk about, it makes me so proud to see how welcoming, kind and supportive our Westroyd children are! Two more new friends start next week, which we are really looking forward to!
