Bienvenido a Westroyd
This half-term we have launched our new approach to teaching Spanish, led by Miss Knight-Francis. Who is actually fluent in French and Spanish, having studied languages at university prior to her teaching degree. I am in awe of the teachers in our school and any primary school, to be honest. We teach eleven subjects, meaning we have expert knowledge of eleven subjects. There is a lot of knowledge and understanding we hold in our brains, both every day and in the long-term. From Music to Art, PE, Computing and DT! Some may say the content is not so hard in primary. Well, in response to that, just have a look at what we have to teach, say in, Science, Maths or English. Do you know what a fronted adverbial is? Or how to calculate ratios and proportions in Maths? The one I have always found tricky is teaching forces and motion in Science. I always found it fascinating, but making sure I totally understood the concepts, was not so much fun. It is impossible to teach something well, if you don’t understand or don’t feel confident.
Modern foreign languages are often one, we as teachers feel out of our depth, which is why we have purchased a scheme to make the teachers feel more confident. It clearly must be working as Miss Martin was holding her head high the other day, as a child in her class went home and told his parents she must be fluent in Spanish. Big thanks to the parents for sharing that comment as it is the kind of feedback our hardworking staff really, really appreciate!
If you are planning your holidays in the new year, could there be an opportunity for the children to try out their new Spanish skills?!
