What a great way to start a Sunday morning with a Junior Park Run. As a family, we have done Saturday morning park runs for years, running 5K listening to my two moaning, whilst also bribing them with a Morrisons breakfast as a treat afterwards. But these days, those sensible people at Parkrun have come up with a junior park run, a much more appropriate challenge for small people, 2K. The best bit is, parents can run with their child, but the adult is not allowed to take the glory and cross the finish line! I like it…. All year, our Mrs Hart has been running an after-school club, and they have been training for this morning all year. Now we have done it, the children have their PB as a starting point, we can do it again and challenge ourselves. It was awesome to see so many parents and children taking part and to see the children really, really challenging themselves. There is a big hill in Bramley Park! The Westroyd attribute of determination really was apparent this morning. I was touched as we finished how the children, supported by parents, went up to say thank you to Mrs Hart for organising the event. I know that means so much to her!
I went out and about with Reception this week to the Leeds Arium. I went back to my environmental education roots, sucking up bugs in pooters! Back in the Autumn term, we collected seeds in Westroyd Park which we then sent to the Arium. They grew the seeds in their big supersonic greenhouses and then sent us the saplings to plant in our EY garden. We did not need to be asked twice to take part in this citywide initiative, the Woodland Creation Scheme. The council is aiming to plant 5.8 million trees by 2050 to combat climate change, increase biodiversity and promote natural flood management. Thank you to George in Receptions Dad, who works at the Arium for getting us involved. If you have never been to the Arium, I would suggest a visit. I have never seen such large greenhouses, there is lots to learn about protecting our environment and the park is cracking! Also, a café and ice-cream shop.
At the end of the week, we hosted our afternoon tea sessions. This is when the children invite a special person in their life and treat them to a cuppa, scone, cake, biscuits and a natter! Thank you to Mrs D and our office team, for making this all work. We welcomed a very important member to the Westroyd family for this event. Ernie the tea urn! Ernie will be making an appearance at all future social events at Farsley Westroyd because there is nothing better than a Yorkshire cup of tea and a natter. Lovely to see our parents socialising and enjoying each other's company. I certainly enjoyed catching up with all the latest news from family members.
Next week in school is right busy with a governor's meeting, new parents meeting, a residential, Big Sing, a local Derby football match, the Pudsey Olympics and then next Saturday's Farsley Festival! There is so much to come before 17th July, I need to write a letter to you all with the dates on, just for my sanity. I know, as a parent, juggling a work calendar and family calendar is a challenge. Somehow, this week, in my house, we are all on residential at the same time! That is a lot of organising I have had to do this weekend. But I am feeling smug that I have avoided the 3.45am drop off at Leeds Bradford airport on Friday morning! My sister has stepped in and taken on that role! But as I say all the time. Life is for living, and you have to make the most of every opportunity that comes along. We are very grateful to all our parents who support their child and our school by getting involved in school events and the school staff that give up their time. All part of making sure our children have the best primary education possible.
