Well, that was a scorcher, was it not? Our children and staff really dug deep to show resilience and a lot of initiative to manage the situation. Especially on some days, the heat intensified at different points in the day! All the children and staff just slowed down, a natural response to the heat and a chest freezer full of ice-pops were consumed over the week across school. My favourite moment was in the Early Years, one morning when they had set up a foot spa salon in the shade in the garden. A small group of reception boys were sat chatting with their feet submerged in a large tough tray of cold water!
There were a lot of adapting events in school and externally. We held our very hot summer fair. I was on ice-cream, which was short-lived as the ice-cream kept melting! Mr Popple, Mr Fawcett and Miss Connell had a fabulous time as they volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at them! Mr Fawcett said he had one of the best days in school ever on the penalty shoot-out! Getting in some practice for his summer 5 playing aside, I think!
The Pudsey Olympics had to be modified due to the heat, and I am glad I gave in to Mr Popple's sulking because he was there to make sure we did as well as we could do. A close eye was kept on the scoring system by our Mr Popple. We did our best with some top three positions in events.
Being a small one-form entry school and a school that focusses heavily on promoting positive relationships and togetherness – frequently I notice the impact of these factors. I saw two big examples of this last week. Y1 had their very hot sharing assembly for parents. Sat on the stage as a whole class, perfect behaviour, big smiles, nudging each other when it was someone's turn to speak, smiling when it was done, letting each other have their moment, however big or small, clearly loving the moment together.
The second example was our Y3 sleepover on Friday night. Some children, first time away from home, were reluctant – we had an escape route planned. Not needed – they all stayed, and they felt so comfortable with each other and staff that they all went to sleep and slept. To quote Mr Popple at 6.30am on Saturday morning. “They were a dream!”
We said goodbye to some of our fabulous students on Friday. We support city college by providing placements for local young people to complete child-care courses or teaching assistant courses. Their year-long placements ended this week, so they can go back to college and complete end-of-year exams. Sad to see them go, as they fit in with our ethos and have worked really hard. (But they do love us so much that the 1st year is coming back in September!) We also said goodbye to our student teacher in Early Years from Becketts university who has been with us for the last 6 weeks. We wish her well in her hunt for employment now up in the north-east.
So three weeks to go now and so much to happen!
