Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Each week we'll be keeping you up to date with our weekly blog. In addition to this, please read our half-termly curriculum map to find out what will be happening in Year 1. smiley

Important information

PE - Tuesday and Thursday. Please come to school in your PE kit on these days and these days only. 

Books - Change books Friday. Your child will come home with 1 new Library  book and a Phonics book every Friday. An Ebook will also be assigned each Friday, a login for this can be found in your child's reading record.   Please make sure you have been reading at home at least three times a week. Please record any reading you have done in your reading diary. Your reading diary must always be in your bookbag so that we can read with you in school. 

Spellings - New spellings will be sent home every Friday. Please make sure your child's spelling book is in their bookbag on Friday so that the new ones can be stuck in. Please use your spelling book to practice them. If there is evidence of practicing, your child will receive a green point. Please also check which spellings have been marked as incorrect as these will still need to be practised.

Spring 2

Week 6

Thank you all for an outstanding week, you have all blown me away.

In writing this week we finished writing instructions. These instructions allowed us to share our knowledge of building windmills with others.  We have worked extremely hard to use finger spaces this week too.

In maths this week we started to look at mass and volume. We investigated how weighing scales are used, and why they are important. In groups, we weighed different objects, exploring; heavy and light. We explored how size can influence weight too. 

In Science this week we finished exploring materials and designed our final and most amazing house plan so far-using our knowledge of materials to build the sturdiest structure for the three little pigs. 

In DT we finished making our windmills. They were all extremely sturdy and rotated in the breeze.

 

 

Week 5

What an amazing week we have had. 

In writing this week we have started to write instructions to make a windmill. Using the skills and knowledge we acquired in DT, we have started to write instructions, so others can make an amazing windmill too!

In maths this week we have focused on measurement. We have started to measure different items using equipment such as cubes, pencils and rubbers. We also started to compare height, using terminology such as taller, smaller, length and height. 

This week we also went on a very exciting trip. Together, with the help of some very helpful parents, we walked to Pudsey Civic Hall. When we arrived, we were greeted by butterflies and lady birds. There we started to sing all the songs we had been practcing for  little sing. Alongside other schools, we had lots of fun singing, playing instruments and dancing.

We also had non uniform day on Friday, bringing lots of chocolate for our Easter Tombola.

Week 4

Week 3

What a lovely week we have had.

This week in writing we have started a new theme. We have focused on a poem called White Sheep by Christina G. Rossetti. This poem describes the weather, forcing on clouds. This week we have explored the different weather types and different ways we can describe them. We also focused on using rhyme, adding this to our poems. Next week we will write and perform our poems for the class. 

In Geography this week we explore directions, and the use of compasses. Together we used the compasses to move around the classroom. Later, we went into the playground and explored North, East, South and West, playing several games to aid our understanding of the compass directions. 

In Science, we continued to explore materials, focusing on the material of glass. We explored its use, how it is made, and where we can find it. We then designed a house for the 3 little pigs, including the material glass. 

In music this week we started to learn some new songs. We will perform these songs at Pudsey civic hall in the coming weeks.

In RE this week we learnt about how Jesus and his deciles fed the five thousand. We discussed the importance of this story and how it made people feel. 

In PSHE we continued to explore emotions. We identified both big and small emotions and how they can make us feel. We also explored what can cause certain emotions and how we can aid them.

Week 2

We have had a fantastic week this week.

In maths this week we have started to look at numbers up to 50. We started by exploring the numbers up to 50. We have used base 10 to explore tens and ones.

In writing this week we finished creating our fact file about the UK weather and seasons. We continued to use our skills of full stops and finger spaces. We continued to focus on the use of tall and small letters, ensuring to write on the line. 

In science this week we focused on the material of glass. We explored its use, how it is made and its properties. We then designed a house for the three little pigs, including windows and frames. 

In Geography this week we explored the seasons in the UK, their names and what happens in each season. 

Week 1

We have had a lovely start to the term.

In writing this week we have focused on fact files. We have learnt about titles and subtitles, identifying where they are placed on the page. Our Fact file tells us about the different weather and seasons in the UK. We have used this to help us describe the different weather and seasons, using our experiences to inform our writing. 

In maths this week we have focused on addition and subtractions to 20. Using our number bonds to 10 to inform our bonds to 20. Using our counters, we have explored sums such as 17-5 =12, using our knowledge to tell us that 7-5=2. 

In Geography this week we explored the United Kingdom, learning about England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. We located these on a map, then tried to find the UK on the 3D globe. 

In PSHE we explored feelings, and how different feelings look and feel. We explored how different people feel differently, and how everyone shows emotion in different ways.

Spring 1

Week 6

Well done everyone, what a lovely term we have had. I am very proud of you all!

In writing this week we finished writing about what we can see when we look at a tree, linking this to winter. We then wrote and designed Valentine's Day cards to give to our loved ones, telling them what we appreciate about them. 

In Maths, we continued to focus on the bonds up to 20, using our previously learnt knowledge of bonds t 10 to inform this. 

In Art this week we finished making our 3D spider, connecting the legs to the torso and continuing to sculp its features using rolls of paper-how impressive it looks!

In music this week we continued to explore the groove. Today we explored how changing the tempo made the music faster or slower. The tempo is speed. 

In history this week we finished exploring the toys of the past, finalising how they had changed over time in comparison to the toys we play with today.

Week 5

We have had a lovely week this week. 

In writing this week we started to re-focus on the story: What do you see when you look at a tree. This time focusing on how the trees look in winter, comparing this to how they looked in autumn. We explored Westroyd park, walking there and back, observing the natural world around us and how winter has changed its appearance. 

In maths this week we finished looking at numbers up to 20. Starting then to focus on addition and subtraction with numbers to 20. We focused on number bonds, and how we can use them to form additions.

Week 4

What a lovely wheel we have had.

In maths this week we have continued to explore numbers up to 20. Focusing on greater and smaller and each number's position on the number line.  We have explored estimating where numbers are position and how we can make informed guesses.

In writing this week we have continued to explore the book That Rabbit belongs to Emily Brown, honing in on the use of the skill of full stops and finger spaces. 

In art, we have started to make a giant 3D paper sculptor of a spider, inspired by Louise Bourgeois. Working together, we rolled and folded different sized tubes and taped them together to form aspects of the spider's body.

In music this week we continuee to explore in the groove, singing along to different tunes in the style of Baroque.

In history, we explored how toys have changed over time, comparing our own toys with historical toys, comparing the shape, materials and mechanisms used to power them. We also played with both toys, of course!

In PSHE we explored all the different substances that we can put on our skin, exploring both safe and unsafe substances.

Week 3

We have had a wonderful week.

In maths, we have been working on numbers up to 20. This week, we focused on estimating. By using predictions and estimates, we explored how to find missing numbers on a number line and examined concepts of more and less.

In writing, we concentrated on our final piece, continuing to use our excellent capital letters. We used "The Train Ride" as inspiration to create our own repetitive phrases. Later in the week, we began reading our new storybook, "That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown" by Cressida Cowell.

In Religious Education, we explored various biblical stories, discovering their meanings and messages. We discussed why these messages are significant.

In Art, we continued to develop our 3D sculpting skills. Using the paper-folding techniques we learned in previous lessons, we crafted our very own Tree of Life. These impressive sculptures are bright and detailed, and they will soon decorate our classroom walls once they dry.

Week 2

This week has been filled with excitement and creativity.

In maths, we continued to focus on numbers up to 20. We learned about 1 more and 1 less, and we practised using number lines up to 20.

In writing, we continued exploring the poetry book, The Train Ride. At the beginning of the week, we rewrote parts of the story and later planned our own stories, using repeating phrases throughout.

In Science, we continued to investigate different materials. We focused on how certain materials are suited to specific objects. We explored the classroom to find various objects, identifying their uses and materials.

In computing, we discovered robots in our classroom and learned how to control them using instructions. We role-played as robots, giving each other instructions before working in groups with the Bee Bots.

In Art, we explored 3D sculptures by folding and manipulating paper to create bright and colourful designs. These impressive sculptures now enhance our art display for everyone to enjoy.

In History, we had a very special guest who shared stories about the toys she played with when she was young. We compared her toys with those we play with today and interviewed her throughout the afternoon. We learned a lot about the past, particularly how much technology has changed since her childhood.

Week 1

This week has been a amazing start to the term. On Monday morning we woke up to snow, and lots of it! it was magical, some of us were snowed in at-home but some of us ventured out into the icy cold snow, ready for Monday morning. On Monday morning we started by exploring the snow, how it felt, what happened when we touched it, and how long it took to melt.  We also explored painting with the snow, by adding powder paint we made lots of wintery pictures. 

In maths with week we started to explore number up to 20. Focusing on ones and tens- using base 10 to help us. 

In writing this week we started a new book- The train ride. This book focusses on poetry. Together we identified rhyming words, repeated phrases and the storyline. We wrote our own rhyming sentences and explored what we could see if we were on a train. 

In science we started our new topic- materials. This week we focused on the different materials, exploring wood, metal, glass, plastic and fabric.

Autumn 2

Week 5

This week has been very exciting indeed.

This week in maths we recapped subtraction, working particularly on the methods we use the subtract. Using counters, bricks and our number bond knowledge we completed different subtraction questions.

In science we explored the season of summer, learning the difference and similarity with the other seasons. We also put out the last cup to collect this weeks water amount- next week we will compare the amounts of water we have collected.

In geography we continued to explore maps, particularly developing our understanding of what out school would look like on a map. Together we went outside, using chalk we mapped out the different parts of the school on a large scale.

This week we had a lot of fun baking gingerbread. We made, baked and decorated 160 biscuits that were later sold in the Christmas fair, with your amazing hard work we sold out.

On Friday thank you to or amazing hard work we had a very comfortable day. We came in in our Pajamas and looked super cozy doing so- what a great way to end the week.

 

Week 4

What a brilliant and fun filled wee we have had.

This week we have continued to practice our school Christmas play, working very hard alongside the year 2 class to learn our lines and songs. We have also started to put the scenes together in the hall., learning movements and ques to enter the stage. On Monday, the stage will be up and ready to practice on.

This week we earned all of our sheep points, meaning that on Friday 6th December Year 1 will have a Pyjama day, so please ensure you come in your comfiest Pyjamas laugh.

In maths this week we have continued tour shape Topic, taking a deep dive into 2D shapes. We learned how to identify each shape, and how common shapes are in everyday life- searching around our classroom to find as many as we could. This week we also recapped 3D shape, and we started to make patterns with both 2D and 3D shape.

In Writing this week we continued to explore Percy the park keepers snowy adventure- One Snowy Night. This week we written lots of lovely sentences retelling the story, focusing on the skill of using finger spaces.

For Art this this week we continued to make our lanterns- speaking of lanterns we had our amazing Light up Farsley night. Alongside the whole school and the entirety of Farsley together we had an amazing, and beautiful night.

Week 3

This week we started a new book in Writing-One snowy Night by Nick Butterworth. We explored the different characters in the book, how they felt and where they live-writing sentences to expand on this. when writing sentences we are focusing on the skill of using finger spaces.

In Maths this week we have started the new topic of shape- especially 3D shape.

We have started to the at the names and properties of each shape, learning what make them identifiable. 

In Science we continue to look at the seasons, this week we learned all about winter- learning was made easier due to mother nature lending us a learning hand and supplying us with lots of snow.

In PE we continued to explore movement and gymnastics. We learned different ways to land and different balance positions. 

In Design Technology we continued to explore the different ways we could attach different materials, gluing, pinning and stapling.

Week 2

This week had been very exciting indeed.

This week in maths we continued to recap the addition and subtraction block, showcasing our skills throughout the week.

In writing this week we finished our work based around What do you see when you look at a tree, and wrote lots of lovely sentences about our trip to the park. 

In geography this week, an alien crash landed in our school and was very confused and lost, so we made them a map of our classroom to ensure they could find there way around.

In science this week we focused on Autumn, and had a deep dive on what makes Autumn so special, we used the knowledge we found out on our walk as well as things we have done at home.

Please encourage all children are practicing the school play lines, to make putting the scenes together more organised to ensure we can focus on the preference itself in school.

Week 1

This week we have had an amazing start to the new term, settling straight back into the weekly routine despite a few new changes. 

In maths this week we recapped some sections from the additional and subtraction block- mainly recapping fact family's, addition using counters and subtraction on the number line.

In writing we started out new book- what do you see when you look at a tree. As part of this we went on a lovley autumn walk to Westroyd park, exploring the area for different trees. We discussed how being out of the fresh air, amongst the golden trees made us feel. In addition to this we also linked this walk to science- in which we have started to look at the world around us. This week we focused on the different seasons, our walk allowed us to search for signs of autumn . smiley

This term we have started out DT block, focusing on the process of making puppets. This week we explored different materials and the ways we can attach them together. 

On Tuesday it was Bonfire night. Throughout the day in the areas we made exploding firework paintings with lots of glitter. We then learned all about bonfire night safety with Miss Connell- also learning a little bit about the gun powder plot too.
