Farsley Westroyd Primary School & Nursery

Determined to achieve, determined to have fun!

As we are coming to the end of the term, yes, there are only three weeks to go, the school diary is rammed.  Mrs Hollingshead who has a talent for organising us all, as she is always one step ahead, is in complete control and the only thing that could throw a spanner in the works, is the weather! Although I did have a thought the other day that earlier in my career, rain did use to complicate plans in the summer term. I have had many trips to Filey at this time of year, paddling in the sea with children in the pouring rain, and sports days rescheduled time after time. However, in more recent years, we just don't seem to have as much rain. I have not had to do the slip test on wet grass for many a year! Is this a sign of climate change perhaps? Do check our calendar and make sure your notifications are switched on your mobile, in case I have just jinxed the weather, and we do need to make changes.

The feedback I often get about our school is that it is a shame we don't have a field. I have to admit, my offspring went to a similar primary school to ours and I made the same statement when I first looked around. But, it does not make a difference to our children's sporting development. If anything, our skills are far stronger because we are contained in how we teach. Our PE teaching is really strong, and the basic skills are transferable to any sport! Plus, we have astroturf, which means we can use this space all year round. You will have noticed the gastro turf has come up in KS1. This has been an annoyance since I arrived. It was badly put down, in small sections, meaning over time the sections have drifted apart, creating trip hazards. I was quite worried about what would be underneath, but in the end, it all had to come up. The children at the moment have said they do not want to replace it, but I think this will be a project for the school council next year, to decide what to do. Anyway, last week we had two big competitive events. Pudsey Olympics and Y2 Skipping school. We did ourselves proud, with other schools, commenting upon our sheer determination to do our best. We came 5th out of all the schools in Pudsey in the Olympics, with Mr Fawcett telling me this is a significant improvement. We had many first places in races. Jaxson in Y4 was amazing in the 400 metres, one of the hardest running races in my opinion. Lucas in Y4 was on track to beat Usain Bolt in his race!  In skipping, the children have gone from not being able to skip to putting in a fierce competitive attitude to beating off other teams in the finals. Westroyd determination at its best! We are, of course, going for 1st place next year in both events.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Summer Fair on Thursday night! It was a lovely chilled-out evening. Especially for Mr Popple in the stocks! We will get the final total to you. What we are doing with the funds, is sharing it between classes, so that the children directly choose how they in their class want to spend it, for their direct benefit!

To end the week, we had Jeff Rich the drummer from Status Quo in school for a drumming workshop and the day ended with the Y3 sleepover! Takeaway pizza, a movie, den building and lots of sleep (Maybe not the sleep bit!)
