Week 5

Well... What a busy week this has been!

We started off the week with Equilibria visiting us. The showed us some Islamic calligraphy. We explored some Islamic art, looked at extracts from the Qur'an and had a try at some calligraphy in Arabic and English using bamboo pens and water based ink. It was very messy but very fun!

We started our new book in writing this week "The First Drawing" Miss Martin read the book to us and it was all about what it would have been like to create the first drawing in the Stone Age. We then got to experience what it would have been like to draw in caves! We went into our very own caves where it was dark and cramped and drew animals and around our hands just as the cave people did. It was tricky to do because there was no light and the texture of our caves were bumpy.

We finished the week with our first Sheep Point Prize.... Chocolate pizza! We used a cookie for the dough, chocolate sauce for the tomato base, sprinkles for the cheese and marshmallows for the peperoni. It was DELICIOUS!

Week 4

This week we went outside to create some interesting art work. We created rubbings using different textures found in the playground.

History was really interesting as we became archaeologists and learnt all about the Amesbury Archer. We looked at the artefacts he was buried with and discussed how these provided us with clues about his life but didn't give us the whole picture. We also enjoyed learning about Stonehenge and would love to know why it was there.

In RE this week we read the story of Moses. We created a drama in our partners to show Moses talking to God as the burning bush. We thought about what Moses would be feeling and thinking.

Week 3

In English this week, we have continued learning to use different conjunctions and we have been expanding our noun phrases by including adjectives, prepositions and verbs. The setting descriptions they have produced have been out of this world with some very interesting vocabulary.

In PE we have been learning the names of different gymnastics positions, rolls and tucks. We had some excellent experts in the class who provided some great demonstrations.

We had a really exciting history lesson as we got to explore a Stone Age home called Skara Brae. We pretended to be archaeologists and explored the ruins that were left behind. We used a cool 3D model to help us do this. Have a look and see what you can find....

Week 2

This week we started our new text in English 'Stone Age Boy'. We received a letter from Stone Age Boy himself telling us all about his adventures and how he'd love us to read his book. We created a story map and started to learn about prepositions and conjunctions that we can use in our writing.

History was one of our favourite lessons this week. We looked at where the Stone Age began on a timeline. We used toilet roll to help us understand just how long ago it was. Each square represented 1,000 years. We used the whole toilet roll around the class and thought surely this would be long enough? Miss Martin then explained that we would actually need 3 toilet rolls in total to represent how long ago the Stone Age was as the first recorded piece of history dated back to 900,000 BC.

In reading we looked at the front cover and blurb of Stig of the Dump. We asked questions, make predictions and used our background knowledge to have a think about what the story might be about. We're very excited to start reading it next week!

We did our first ever Spanish lesson this week! It was so much fun. Please test us on the words we know! Practice makes perfect.

Week 1

Well... What an amazing first week back we've had! Everyone has worked so hard with their learning and have shown what proud Westroyd Learners they are! We have a very exciting year ahead and we can't wait to tell you all about it.

This week we learnt about British Values. We learnt what they mean and the importance of them all. We then worked together in our groups to create a drama that shows what life would be like if one of our British Values disappeared. We quickly realised that Britain would be an unsafe and messy place without them!

We have also looked at the Protected Characteristics. We discussed how we must treat everyone fairly no matter who they are and that some people need more help than others and that's okay. We should respect, help and show kindness to everyone no matter who they are or where they are from.

In maths, we have started our new topic of Place Value. We've been using different equipment such as base ten, beads and number lines.

We've started our new class novel 'The Wild Robot' which we're really enjoying and always ask if we can read one more chapter.

This week we also completed some learning about our Zones of Regulation which helps us to manage and understand our emotions. If you'd like to learn more about this please visit our Zones of Regulation page under 'Key Information' on the website.
