Physical Education Curriculum Statement
At Farsley Westroyd, our PE curriculum is designed to inspire and motivate all learners, equipping them with the physical, social, and emotional skills to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Our vision is to foster a positive, inclusive, and challenging environment where every child is encouraged to participate, enjoy, and succeed in physical activities.
We aim to nurture a lifelong love for physical activity in our students, promoting confidence, resilience, and teamwork. Through a broad range of sports and physical challenges, we ensure pupils develop essential motor skills, physical competence, and a deep understanding of the importance of health and fitness. Our curriculum is designed to help children appreciate the benefits of physical activity, both individually and as part of a team, while recognising its role in their overall well-being.
Our PE curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum and structured to build on key skills progressively from EYFS through to Year 6. We emphasise fundamental movement skills in the early years, ensuring children develop coordination, balance, and agility as the foundation for future physical achievements. As pupils progress through the school, we introduce more complex skills and strategies in a wide range of sports, including athletics, gymnastics, dance, invasion games, and outdoor activities.
Through engaging lessons, we provide opportunities for children to challenge themselves, set goals, and reflect on their progress. We focus on fostering a growth mindset, encouraging pupils to take risks, persevere, and learn from their experiences. By integrating physical literacy with mental well-being, we help students build the confidence to succeed in and out of the sporting arena.
At Farsley Westroyd, we believe that PE is for everyone. We celebrate the diverse abilities of our learners and provide tailored support to ensure all students can access and enjoy physical education. We promote an inclusive culture, where each child feels valued and has the opportunity to participate, learn, and excel.
Our ultimate goal is to equip every child with the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to engage in lifelong physical activity, developing habits that will positively impact their health, fitness, and social well-being. Through our carefully structured and supportive PE curriculum, we empower children to reach their full potential and become confident, active members of their community.
Key Strands:
At Farsley Westroyd, our PE curriculum covers key strands designed to ensure that all pupils develop a strong foundation in physical skills and abilities. In the early years, children are taught to master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, alongside developing essential balance, agility, and coordination. These fundamental skills are applied through a variety of activities that make learning enjoyable and engaging. As children progress, they participate in team games, where they learn to apply simple tactics for attacking and defending, fostering teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. Additionally, pupils engage in dance, using simple movement patterns to build rhythm, coordination, and creativity. Our carefully structured approach ensures that each strand of the PE curriculum is taught progressively, allowing every child to develop confidence, competence, and a love for physical activity.
As pupils progress into KS2, our curriculum is designed to build upon the foundational skills learned in the early years, ensuring all pupils continue to develop competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. Pupils work to refine and master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, while also advancing their balance, agility, and coordination through more complex activities. They take part in a wide variety of team games, where they develop and apply more advanced tactics for attacking and defending, deepening their understanding of teamwork, strategy, and communication. As part of the curriculum, students also engage in performing dances, learning to create and execute more intricate movement patterns with control and expression. In addition, pupils participate in activities such as athletics, gymnastics, and outdoor challenges, ensuring they experience a well-rounded program that promotes physical fitness, resilience, and collaboration. Through these progressive strands, our KS2 PE curriculum nurtures not only physical skill development but also the enjoyment and understanding of the importance of lifelong physical activity.
